Did you miss verizon dsl questions?

Howdy! I hope ya'll feel lacking in the verizon dsl/redhat questions...

Anywho, so I'm running redhat 9 (no dual boot!) and I have verizon dsl and they are very scared of my os and they won't help me...

I read the other posts on the same subject, but to no avail. I tried logging on as root and typing: ifconfig eth0 , followed by, dhclient which outputted some nifty stuff... but then nothing has changed when I log on as a regular user... I tried typing: /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

but it said that permission was denied (in a very mean tone no less)... it says in the Network Configuratin GUI that eth0 is active, but I can't open webpages w/Modzilla... oh! And I've tried resetting the modem, but no help there...

Thank u guys (&gals?) for all you help! This really new newbie greatly appreciates it!!

When you ran the ifconfig eth0 did it give your ethernet card an ip address? I know it will be time intensive, since you can't copy and paste, but if you could give us a snippet of your first few lines of ifconfig eth0. Also, have you tried pinging any address. At the shell type ping www.getlinuxonline.com. Does that get you anything? If not, try pinging an ip address, such as 68.142.226.44 (yahoo's ip, or one of them anyways). See if that does anything.

Re: Did you miss verizon dsl questions?

One note. When you run ifconfig eth0 you should see output similar to this:

    eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 01:23:AC:69:45:B4
    inet addr:192.168.0.100 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
    RX packets:1285963 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:1271857 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
    RX bytes:342863657 (326.9 Mb) TX bytes:268601082 (256.1 Mb)
    Interrupt:11 Base address:0x6000

If you do not see this, then your NIC most likely isn't running. To bring up your NIC card enter the command ifconfig eth0 up

If you are using DHCP in order to connect to the internet then simply run dhcpcd next and it should finish the job for you. Restarting the modem before you do this is usually needed.

Re: Did you miss verizon dsl questions?

Hi! Okay, when I run ifconfig eth0 my out put is:

    Link encap: Ethernet HWaddr: 00:01:02:3C:1F:AB
    inet addr: 192.168.1.47 Bcast: 192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:25 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:29 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carriers:2 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:2412 (2.3 Kb) TX bytes:2652 (2.5 Kb) Interrupt:10 Base address:0xec80

I tried ping www.getlinuxonline.com... but that didn't work... but when I pinged the other address you gave me, I got some out puts... that kept repeating... I'll try restarting the modem before I dhclient (the other one (dhcdcd or something) doesn't work)

    Thanks every one!

Re: Did you miss verizon dsl questions?

Okay, tried the restarting of the modem and dhclient and my out put is:

Then, if I try to open a webpage, sometimes the computer will freeze (by the by, is there some way to safely shut down the computer when it does this?) or recently, I just tried to open a web page and it said www.redhat.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again...

Could this have anything to do w/my fire wall? I just tried to disable it, and my computer froze again... not so good...

    Thank's ya'll!

Re: Did you miss verizon dsl questions?

Hmmm, are you behind a router or connected straight to the modem? That IP address is very "different" in either case. Unless your very blessed and have 46 other computers sitting around ;-).

You definitely have an issue with your resolver, whether it be the dhcp client or possibly your resolv.conf file.

Another task for you is to give us a peek at your /etc/resolv.conf file.

Re: Did you miss verizon dsl questions?

I am connected straight into zee modem... its a westell versaLink model 327W (don't know if that helps) and it has 4 ethernet ports...

As for my /etc/resolv.conf it says permission denied (okay, silly question: I just type /etc/resolv.conf in the terminal window right?)

    Thanks!!

    P.S. 46 computers *drools*

Re: Did you miss verizon dsl questions?

Well I think you have a bigger issue then if your plugged straight into the modem, and you have a local addy. Others might have used this modem, only thing I can think of is that it is a builtin router that has assigned you a 192.168.*.* addy. Anyways, heh, no you don't type it in that way. You use your favorite editor of choice(ie vi, joe, pico, nano) or however many others OR you can type more /etc/resolv.conf and see what it says. Let us know! Yes I would love 46 comps as well.

Re: Did you miss verizon dsl questions?

I suggest shutting down both the modem, and your PC. Let them stay this way for about 30-60 secs. After that time plug your modem back in. Let it completely start itself up.

Now it's time to turn your PC back on. If it's configured for DHCP which it looks like. It should grab a correct IP from your ISP through your modem. Everything should work at this point.

If you still have problems, check your IP address. ifconfig eth0 If you still see a 192.168.x.x number then there are still problems. You can try a dhclient eth0 (Hopefully RedHat has this command.) at this point to hopefully force it to renew a proper IP address.

An acceptable IP address would be 1.x.x.x-126.x.x.x which is Class A or a Class B is a little harder to explain but it's basically Network.Network.Host.Host.

Re: Did you miss verizon dsl questions?

Hi again! Okay, so when I type: more /etc/resolv.conf I get: search localdomain

When I tried shutting everything down and starting everything up again and doing the ifconfig eth0 I still get a 192.168.1.47 and when I tried dhclient eth0 no help arrives... ???

    Sigh... any thoughts ya'll?

    Thanks!!
