Hmmm... from what I have read, it may be better for me to move to Gentoo??
Hello all. Long time, no questions (which is odd for me). I have one for you...
I just built a new rig (Athlon 64 based) and have a question... When I loaded Windows (I am REALLY attached to DW), I noticed that the proc was running really hot. Later, I found that I didn't have AMD Cool and Quiet enabled, nor did I have the driver loaded. Basically, the CPU was full throttle all the time, instead of being scaled back when not needed. Well, I installed this 'driver' and all is well.
Now, I know that Athlon64's run 32-bit code, so I don't think I will have a problem getting Slack on the machine. However, is there any way for me to utilize this Cool and Quiet stuff, or am I going to be stuck with a processor that wants to roast itself every time I boot Slack? I mean, right now, I am using the stock heatsink and fan (my Thermaltake PIPE will be here tomorrow) with Arctic Silver, but I am not sure if a new HSF setup will help me out if there is no way I can use Cool and Quiet. Of course, I could just go to Water Cooling, but my balls aren't big enough...

I am not privileged enough to use the Athlon 64, so I don't know :P

Hmm... I have read that you can put Slack 10 on an Athlon64 and it will run (of course) but will not take advantage of 64-bit addressing (makes sense), so may only run as fast as it did on 32-bit chips. I have also read though, that it will actually run faster than on a 32-bit chip (probably just a function of the faster clock speed). Who knows...? I am still trying to figure this darn Cool and Quiet thing out. Oh well... time will tell. I may just load it (on a SATA drive...fun fun fun), and find a utility to monitor the temp and see what kind of difference I observe.

I'm sorry I haven't responsed sooner, but I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed on Friday, and I'm still dizzy as I type this.
In the Kernel config under Power management options there is CPU Frequency scaling. I think this might be the option you're looking for.

Ah haa... Thanks for giving me something to look for. So, I will need to do a kernel recompile after installing the base system? That will be fun... I don't think I have ever had one come out correctly. I probably just don't know what the hell I am doing ;D

Here is a little extra to help you with it. Cool and Quiet. This is that powernowd they refer to.
