    PCI IDE Controller Card

    Hello all,
I was wondering if any of you has had any experience with adding a PCI IDE controller to your systems. Is it possible, or is it just a bear to set up?
I have reached the point that I require more than 4 drives, and was looking at purchasing an add-on card so I can keep all of my drives, but am not sure if I will have problems in Linux.
Any help would be greatly appreciated (as usual).

    Re: PCI IDE Controller Card

I did this with my Gentoo system, and everything was detected via BIOS so I had nothing to setup. Very simple.

    Re: PCI IDE Controller Card

Should some extra research be required, as far as compatibility, or...? Also, did you install the card before installing Gentoo, or did you already have the system set up? Thanks!

    Re: PCI IDE Controller Card

Well, I would always check for compatibility. I did install the card before I installed Gentoo, however I believe the BIOS does all the setup. Gentoo still reads the /dev as /dev/hda, and /dev/hdb so nothing on the software side seems to be different.

The controller that I have is a promise controller. I would check the kernel under ATA/IDE/MFM/RLL support to make sure the controller you buy is listed there. That's what the kernel detects upon boot.
