    GetLinuxOnline hosted Linux Games?

How does everyone feel about GLO community member hosted Linux games?

Was thinking about titles such as Quake III, UT2k4, RTCW, RTCW:ET, Cube, and Crack Attack.

I tested ZSNES (Super NES emulation) over the internet with Babbing the other day playing Tetris Attack (Crack Attack is a Tetris Attack Clone) and it work extremely well using TCP/IP. So ZSNES games are also a possible hosting solution although it's more of a per individual basis, and not so much a server to connect to.

If people would like to see this then we can use the GLO Calendar on the main site to post future games to be hosted, and at what times. People can then meet up on IRC (Live Help) to help coordinate the games.

Please tell me what you think?

    Re: GetLinuxOnline hosted Linux Games?

I've been going through my collection of games lately, and realized that I have Tribes 2, and Descent 3 for Linux. Those can also be hosted by me.

I also have a copy of Shogo:MAD for Win32 which I believe will work with the Linux version accross the internet. I'll do some more checking, but if that works out then I can host that as well. Eventually I want to own Rune, Rune: Halls of Valhalla, SiN, and as well the Linux copy of Shogo:MAD.

As it currently stands, I have challenged Babbing to a game of Tetris Attack on Monday from 8:00-10:00PM. EST. I'll let everyone know how that goes.

After this I think I'm going to host a game that requires as little resources as possible. To be a small deathmatch level probably. I'm thinking either Quake III, or Unreal Tournament (Classic).

I'm going to start beating some of you with a fish if you don't start posting soon

A little update. I went ahead, and setup a time for a Quake III Arena match on the 24th, and a Descent 3 Monster Ball match on the 28th.

Both should be fun, but I'm really looking forward to the Monster Ball match. It's like playing Soccer with spaceships. With the added benefit of using Lasers, Mass Drivers, Fragmentation missles, etc... and my personal favorite Black holes ;D I hope to see some from our community make the match. I've went ahead and ask some from the Descent 3 community to augment our numbers to help get the ball moving.

Anyway more updates to come later.

    Re: GetLinuxOnline hosted Linux Games?

Little update here: Just finishing up the TA rounds. More people were there then expected. I'll give a quick run down of scores.

    SCORE UPDATE:
    SkyNet vs Babbing 0-3
    neuron vs agamemnon 2-0
    neuron vs SkyNet 4-1
    neuron vs Babbing 3-11

As everyone can see, I really got spanked. So if you want to play GLO's worst TA player, talk to me. The games got started a little late. Around 8:30, but we ended up going over time till about 11:20. The whole thing turned out well though. I'll be getting another night setup for TA you be sure.

friskydrifter, dial-up isn't a big concern for a ZSNES game. It should run fine. So if you want to make a game with us, then please show up, we passed out the ROM before the game so everyone could play.

Update on Descent 3 for 28th. Possible fast hosting solution for us. I've contacted someone about a hosting offer, and things are looking good. This means the game will be able to scale to the full 32 players possible. We won't have to worry about bandwidth.

I'm going to be posting the Descent 3 game on DescentBB soon, so if anyone from GLO wants a spot in the game let me know ahead of time so I can reserve a slot for you, because from what I'm told it's going to be a full house once I do that.

    Re: GetLinuxOnline hosted Linux Games?

I got done hosting/playing Quake III Arena today. I didn't see anyone from the GLO community however I had plenty of people to play with.

As soon as my server came up I had users. After a few minutes it was maxed out. I'm really good at FPS games so I managed to pull the top kills several times. It was great fun, and I really hope to see some of our GLO crowd next time.

Anyway, Descent 3 is coming up so get your butts in gear. I've already got people from the D3 community coming, and if you want to have a blast you better be there. We're going to be doing Monsterball which is like playing Soccer. There will be Teamspeak servers, and free drinks

    Re: GetLinuxOnline hosted Linux Games?

Just a little update on Descent 3. Due to circumstances beyond many peoples control quite a few pilots didn't get to show up to the match, so we ended up with only 3.

We did manage to have a bit of fun even at that playing alot of 2v1 games, but you could see the effects taking it's toll in the score. It's hard enough to fight one person, let alone two. So it was easy as "you keep him occupied, and I'll take the ball, and score."

Oh well, hopefully the next hosted game will have at least an even number of players or more so it doesn't affect the play quite as much. If it's going to be odd I think it would need to be at least 7 peeps.
