    not detecting USB thumb drive

I have a USB thumb drive (128M) that when it is installed before boot it is not seen . And when it is installed after boot I can't get it mounted . I get an error "/dev/sdc1 is not a valid block device" . I have aded it to my "fstab" file and added a new dir in /mnt/usb . It should be /dev/sdc because when I run fdisk -l my hard drives come up as sda and sdb . If I remove the drive and reinsert it, the machine hangs indefinatly as soon as the light on the drive lights up . I've read /var/log/messages ,and nothing is said about loading any drivers for USB storage devices . I'm stumpped ! (which doesnt take much) Please help . Thanks !

Re: not detecting USB thumb drive

craigconrad, I don't have a thumb drive so I'll have to do some research on this matter before I can answer your question, but to help try to get you pointed in the right direction....

There was mention of this topic on these very forums so do a search, and see if you can locate that thread. Also aside from that, check your kernel USB section to see if you need to recompile your kernel with additional support for such a thumb drive.

Re: not detecting USB thumb drive

Sorry this took me so long, but here's what I've been finding at various places around the net.
    http://www.linuxforum.com/forums/ind...howtopic=72520

The difference with this guy, his he can actually get it mounted. The problem occurs when he try's to remount it again. There is a fix for his issue. If you'll notice this is what he has in his fstab. Please check yours against it.

    /dev/sda1 /mnt/cruzer auto auto,user,rw 0 0 ls

Now your /dev/ may not be sda1, but you'll want to check that. Also your /mnt point won't be cruzer. Unless you make it that way.

I also found this: http://www.desktop-linux.net/diskonkey.htm It might be of some use to you.

Did you ever get this problem taken care of? Can you mount it, but not umount it?
