Ok I did some research on Fedora, and it seems like my /etc/modules.d/alsa is the equiv of your /etc/modules.conf

Also since you edit /etc/modules.conf directly then that means you can skip the step of modules-update since that seems to be Gentoo only.

Also you may or may not need to run /etc/init.d/alsasound start because you may or may not have it.

I'm sure the amixer commands listed before will work for you to unmute, but there is also alsamixer if that fails.

Let me know if this gives you success in getting going with ALSA sound, plus also getting Unreal working. If so then I won't have to install it. If not then that will be my next step.

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond , I have been busy outside the house the last few days . Anyway , I looked at your list of kernel modules and I couldn't find any of them in my list . The one thing I do have is an OSS sound module . When it's turned on as module , it turns on a bunch of other modules and support for stuff like sound blaster , yamaha , audio exel dsp 16 , midi , and some other stuff I don't know . I'm not sure if I made the right changes with the ALSA rpms . I installed the rpms that you mentioned . What file do I look into to see if an ALSA module is on my system ?

Thanks for the link to Linux Questions .Org , I think I need to use my kernel compiler to make my modules . That brings me to another question . Why does my video card driver work ,if I didn't use the kernel compiler to make it ?

Okay, one thing. If you're planning on getting ALSA through your kernel, you'll need at least a 2.6.x kernel. Then you'll be able to find those settings I posted earlier.

I'm not familiar enough with the .rpms to help you there.

As for your video card this is a bit of a difficult topic to explain, but when you compile XFree86, you'll be compiling the program that runs your Window Manager. XFree86 also contains all the the open source video card drivers.

Now there is such a thing as closed source video drivers which XFree86 doesn't have. Those you'll need to get from your card manufactor. They will then need to be compiled against the kernel headers, and the driver will most likely be installed into /lib/modules/2.x.x/kernel/drivers/video etc....

Now one last piece of advise. You must have a working kernel, and the kernel sources as they contain the kernel headers to compile anything on a Linux system. This includes but not limited to XFree86, any Video Card driver, and everything else.

Just started ALSA on fedora core 1 , Works great , I can play UT2004 with sound and go back and listen to media player with no problems . I followed the link in Skynet s message , read the instuctions about ten times ,then got brave enough to try it . I removed the RPM packages I had previosly installed and downloaded tarbz files from ALSA web site . Unpacked them in /var . I guess the trick with Fedora is to use the kernel compiler to make your modules , so I did that . Make your modules in this order - lib-oss-utils-driver . I guess the driver should always be the last . Once the driver is made ,run ./snddevices in that folder . The next step in the instructions said to run alsamixer , but I had to reboot before alsamixer would run . Unmute master and center and -you have sound .
OH by the way ,I copied Skynet s listing of /etc/module.conf and added it to mine , worked great .
