unable to access the internet

Hi,

I amy trying to access the internet using my fedora box, but it wont do it.

The ifconfig gives the output as :
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWadr xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
inet addr:192.162.2.42 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
and many more lines (i have no clue if they are relevant or not)

I tried to check the firewall, and switched it off assuming that it was a problem there, but with no luck. I am connected on a router(direct connection), but when i type anything in mozilla, it flashes the error that the url is not found.

I tried service network restart, it is able to do so, but sitll I cant access the internet after that. :-[


Can someone guide me how to fix the problem ? ???

This is the LAN address that you've posted: 192.162.2.42

Is this within the range that your router is issuing? Is your Router set for DHCP or do you need to assign the address manually?

Also you'll need to check the router to make sure that it has a proper internet connection. Even if you're getting a proper LAN address from your router, that still doesn't tell whether the router has a proper address itself, in which case it needs to either be restart, or reconfigured. Please be aware that if you restart your router, that you'll probably need to re-initialize your PC's connection to the router.

Two other points often overlooked:

1. If you aren't getting your DNS addresses by dhcp (from the router)properly then make sure you have the DNS server addresses you use in /etc/resolv.conf

e.g.
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx


2. Also make sure your gateway address points to the router (This means it has to be the same as the routers ip address).
I think this can be set in either /etc/sysconfig/network or /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

If you are having trouble understanding this (i.e. no idea of how networks run) we can probably guide you through it. ;D

hi folks,

thanks for your help. I had a belkin router initially in the lab that was broadcasting the signal, but i could not figure out how to modify the details that you specified in linux, so i plugged the ethernet cable directly to the port and now the ip address as issued by the dhcp server is 149.169.40.150. Inspite of the new ip address, the machine is not able to access the internet I checked the /etc/resolv.conf file only to find that it has one line in it. The line says just one word "search". Do i need to put the address of the dhcp server over here instead of "search" to make the internet work ?

Ok after your assigned an ip address have you ran a program like pump...I am not quite sure what the alternative is for other os's, but I am sure you can download the pump package and try it and see if it works.

ok what is your routers ip address on the internal LAN? (not WAN)
Have you set your gateway to that yet?

And for sure if you dont have your ISP DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf then you cant resolve the requests, and that means you wont get a web page unless you use the ip address in the browser instead of the web address. If dhcp is working correctly it should be putting this in for you but if not just add it yourself.

/etc/resolv.conf should look like

search <--search is optional for all this to work, i just put it there to look familiar to you
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx


the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx represents whatever the DNS servers ip addresses are. Your ISP can tell you this (probably on their web site somewhere?). Or your router may be able to tell you.

friskydrifter is right, if your name servers aren't being placed in /etc/resolv.conf then DHCP has failed. Also a typical LAN address is usually in the range of 192.168.x.x. If you don't have this, and haven't setup DHCP to offer otherwise then most likely your DHCP is failing.

If you're not capable of using DHCP then you'll need to do three things:

Add your nameservers to /etc/resolv.conf
Add your gateway to the routing table
Configure you LAN IP manually in the range allotted.

My suggestion, get DHCP working.
