what happens if you just try ftp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

ie dont add the 21 at the end?

Also you are forwarding port 25 in yout iptables??

heh i just did port forwarding sucessfully and i think the full syntax is

iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -o eth1 -s xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/xx -d xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/xx -p tcp --dport 21 -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j DNAT --to-destination xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/xx:21

this is all the options - you can cut it down.

Also i just did port 80 , for ftp i think it is 20 and 21??

also need masquerading enabled.

Hmmm... I am forwarding ports 20-25 (ssh,ftp,etc.) to this box from my router. My webserver works great forwarding 80, but for some reason, I have some authentication issues... I can log on as anonymous, but not a user. And no matter what I try, I cannot view anything, just says directory does not exist... who knows....

If you can connect via "anonymous" but not as a normal user, you should find the file your specific server uses for determining ftp users. In my /etc there's a file: /etc/ftpusers HOWEVER, I believe this file is for proftpd. Read the man page for your server, and see if it mentions where the config file is, and how to set it up for normal users

That was the hard thing... According to my services setup, I had gssftp running, vsftp, and tftp. I wasn' sure if I needed them all, or it one depending on another one, or...?
It's all a moot point really, as I installed slack yesterday, and probably will not touch RH again. And the funny thing is that Slack's ftp is running right out of the box. Now if I can just figure out the Apache stuff... it is a little different with Slack...
