    FreeBSD vs. Linux

Okay, just to start, I saw a website, LIFB (Linux is for Bitches), where the author is obviously a BSD Fan. My question, without offending Linux Gurus, is, what is the big deal with BSD? What are the benefits and/or differences between BSD and the flavors of Linux? Would one that has a REMOTE (and I do mean, REMOTE) clue about Linux be able to make that transition? I am curious only because of my pending PowerBook purchase. OS X is based on BSD, and I am just wondering if I am going to be using Win and Linux at home, then have to learn another completely different OS for the laptop... I guess if it gets too rough, I could put gentoo on the mac, but that would be kind of a shame...

    Re:FreeBSD vs. Linux

Well, i have never _really_ used it myself. I do however use both OSX and linux and seeing how OSX is based on bsd i can say i kinda use it. To be honest, i think that they are generally similiar, but only because i don't really know much about bsd. I can say that the command line is much the same in linux as it is in bsd so that feels fairly transparent to me. Maybe i will try installing a bsd and get a better opinion.

There seems to be more and more BSD zealots shooting their mouths off recently(see slashdot)

    Re:FreeBSD vs. Linux

i would say *keeeeeeeep* osX... its sooooo pretty ;D ;D
Im not going to move this into flames, because its a pretty valid question.
Its based around alot of things, mainly i would guess its kernel and init style.
kernel is obvious, init style is how it dows stuff while booting up. linux uses sysv (copied from unix or something i think) whereas bsd uses a bsd-style init (duh...)

thats probally all i can help you with.. maybe some other bsd gurus can help you.

but bottom line, its not sifferent enough to make you not able to use osx on the command line. osx has been changed alot too. main point is the directory structure has been changed. no biggie there... just deal with it

    Re:FreeBSD vs. Linux

If you've used Slackware before, then you'll be familiar with BSD's init.

Slackware is the closet I've ever come to BSD, so that's about all I can help you with.

I have used Slack before, unfortunately, not for a long enough time, or in depth enough, to really USE it...

You know what's weird... I went to this guys site about 4 days ago, trying to find vi (I wanted to install vi, as my RH box had vim on it... guess it doesn't matter now, as I am running slack). Anyways, I surfed the site for a bit, and did't stumble across the page. Thanks!

    Re:FreeBSD vs. Linux

There's not a lot of difference between "vi" and "vim" really. "vim" is "vi improved" meaning you can run it in classic vi mode, or you can run it with the extras it includes.

Aragorn that was a very nice link. We need to collect all these links we're posting so we can put them in a file for people to view, because these post on the forums while not gone become increasingly hard to find as time passes.

    Re:FreeBSD vs. Linux

Sure...we can put that together. As soon as I get my laptop working I am going back into development mode, so I gotta get some stuff out for the site like, this friggin software checklist that I am having a problem with.
