    Suggestions for building a pc

I have an old Gateway computer I want to rebuild and install Linux for my son. I am looking for suggestions on motherboard/chip, etc. I dont want to spend more than $500 for everything (HD, Video Card, Sound Card, Mobo, chip, memory, power supply) I have a monitor, speakers, case, floppy and CD that I can keep. I want to go with AMD, not Intel. Thanks!

How old is your son and what will he be doing with the machine? For a basic system (that Linux has no problem installing on) I can tell you what has worked for my second system:

    Athlon 1.33 ($40)

ECS K7S5A ($40) or maybe $50 for the Pro (USB2.0) model

Crucial RAM 512Mb DDR (I think it was $75??)

PS 500W ($25-150, depending on who you buy one from)

Rage 128 Video ($30, you may spend $100-150 for a better one, but for basics...)

    Soundblaster PCI Series ($30?)

    then I spend a couple hundred on hard drives (100Gb, 30Gb, 40Gb)

It all adds up to a basic system, and my main system definitely makes it look as such, but it takes what I throw at it... so far

If you can spend just a little extra on your mobo, and get onboard LAN/Sound, and save some money in those areas. Just an option to think about.

That's true... the ECS has decent onboard sound, and has onboard LAN. the sound isn't as good as the Nforce on my main system (Asus A7N8X Deluxe) but it costs a helluva lot less.

Hmmm... that's odd... I've never had one problem, knock on wood. Everything has gone well with installs and such.

Yes onboard works very well for me, and I'd rather have it in many cases, because it saves me money.

Good point, about the money thing. I mean, some stuff, I would rather have external... things that can be made to perform well, such as video, etc. But things that just don't matter to me, i.e. sound, LAN, I try to get onboard. How different is onboard LAN versus PCI add-on, performance wise? I wouldn't think too much... It all depends on what makes you feel better, I suppose.

don't get anything with propritary nvidia nforce crap
That aside, the neforce is great with quality onboard video and sound
onboard AC97 sound is the cheapest you can get, but most people seem to use it with no problems.
Personally i'd be happy with onboard sound, video and networking as long as i have fairly ready access to drivers
