    Would anyone be interested...

At one time, I fell in love with a messenger client called Devil Messenger. It was an instant messenger with chat room capabilities, and it ran on windows. I got in touch with the original programmer for the client, and he was passing me information to get started on a *nix port of the client. Before I finished the client, the company running the server and offering the client and service dumped the whole project. It was a popular client, but they didn't bother to inform their user base they were canning the project. We all just woke up one day and couldn't connect... about 3 weeks later the site for the project came down and in its place was a site for an "online dating service." (And yes, the new site is still owned by the old company... it didn't change hands.)

Ever since then, I've wanted to write my own instant messenger/chat software. I want something besides aim/msn/icq/yahoo/jabber... I want something more like devil back. Would anyone be interested in trying to help with this project? If so, let me know and we'll get started

GAH!!!! Not another language to learn!!!... When I'm ready to learn python, I'll do something a bit easier... like write yet another irc bot... or write a web spider... or something similar

I want the client / server to be fast... and to be a native binary... so it needs to be a compiled language, and java doesn't count it's a compiled language, but the bytecode is still interpreted.

That's alright... I'll probably put this project idea on hold for a while anyway... I could start it by myself, but it'd be great to work on it as a team with people who would be interested in such a project. I've started working on some ideas for the protocol, but no code yet.

well, i could probably take this as a out of school jobby and get extra credit for it or something which is always good.

    Re:Would anyone be interested...

Well, it would need to be open sourced... I would prefer a BSD style license to a GPL license, but I'm flexible. If you can convince your instructors that this is worth the credit, he/she needs to know that it will be open source software
