hey, when i get bored i try other things, slack is still on my system, and with recent news it is sounding like gentoo may not take over my system, just get tired of searching for dependencies, although i do like the fact that gentoo does source installs. so it may still take over my system because it is nice and quick, although it will take some playing, like i would like to convert from the sys-v inti style to the far better bsd init style, everything seems so spread out in sys-v

I'm probably going to end up still putting Gentoo on the PII 300, although the install is probably going to take forever, and a day. I need all the speed I can get. I just hope the 64 MB of RAM will be able to run all the tasks I need.

More then likely for the PIII 450, it'll be running the new Slackware once it arrives, as all it has to do is run video files smoothly, which I think I can accomplish with MPlayer, the mga driver, and framebuffer console. I'm planning on turning it into sorta a multimedia machine for the home entertainment system, which btw is just a TV, DVD, and VCR Woo!! Feel the power heh, LoL. Great! Now I can watch my Anime on the TV ;D

Lastly, but not least is the old 800 Mhz Athlon, which I think I'll end up buying a 1.3 Ghz Duron (again) or a 1.6 (retail this time so I have 3 year warrenty) and using it as the gaming machine soley. Which means it will only have Windows XP on it. Granted, WineX has come along way, and can probably play all the games I play just as fast, but in the end XP will hold me for future games, and it's that much easier atm. Oh, and it will double for an encoding machine, whenever I need to do such things.

You have to understand that getting an Athlon for this board would mean that I'd have to get a 1.4 Ghz 200 FSB, which is $125. Where as I could get a 1.3 Ghz Duron for less then $45 Retail. I might even be able to put the 1.6 Ghz Duron on this board. I'll have to do some research for that, and it would be alot cheaper then the Athlon solution. Plus it would be faster as the Duron is not crippled like the celeron. The Duron runs about 10% slower then an equivalent Athlon.

if you have to upgrade why not get something actually better, and you are going to need a board for the new chip are you not?

    Re:Slackware 9.1rc2

Nope, the only thing I need is to get my 800 Mhz back upto 1.3 Ghz, or maybe even higher if I can.

My next platform upgrade will be to the Athlon 64 when the price falls so until then I have no intention on spending alot of money on really obsolete hardware.
