    ok here is my idea

instead of having a user password, i am going to have a lilo password, is it possible to set it so your user auto logs in? also when i start x it resets my num lock, any way to set it so a few keys start on startup and startup of startx?? well thats about it, i dont have a password for my xp, but have passwords for linux, i would much rather have linux auto login with a lilo password then login with a normal password, then one password protects all, of course my root would still have a super dope password. and since i never actually run as root its kinda pointless having me login in all the time. no one actually has physical access to my computer but my parents so i dont really care, i could run my user passwordless with no lilo pass and it wouldnt matter.
this was probably a stupid idea but still,

If you run your user passwordless and you have ANY services running which accept logins (especially ssh or telnet) you are inviting people into your system with the minimum difficulty of guessing your login name.

    Just a thought

yeah i thought as much, i want a way for it to read the shadow file and log me in automatically, because then i skip the login prompt and well yeah, i dont want to run passwordless in linux, just have it autologin, like setup a script or something to do it for me at startup, but i dont quite know how.

you COULD use "autologin" but I don't like recommending things until I've tried them...

do a google search for "linux autologin" and you should find a download for it... it is supposed to automatically log in as the user in a specific configuration file, and run X for you after it logs you in.

ok i like the login sound, one problem, i disklike it starting x automatically, i just want it to auto log me in, period. i use slack because it doesnt use a gui login crap, i hate those, because you dont have a chance to even get to native cli through that...

Hrm, looks like you used slack for the wrong reason. You could have used any other distro and just edited the run level from 5 to 3. Simple

Well, that's probably just one reason. Others could be that it runs faster, has a BSD style init, and doesn't come preconfigured to load up useless programs.

i dont want to run as root, i want to run as a user, i just dont feel like logging in cuz i am lazy lol. it really doesnt bother me i just wanted to see if someone knew how to do it lol. i use slack because it doesnt come bloated with shit like every other distro i have used. which is quite a bit, other than gentoo which came with nothing, quite literally. because portage refused to work.

Or, you could actually spend as much time as you do on slackware, on redhat, and make it as fast. and have it not load programs that aren't of any use. Also, you would have distro that makes regular, painless, upgrades, and that has tech support if you want it. Linux is gonna run the same when you get down to the nuts and bolts, it is really whether or not hte distro makes you do it or not. Slackware is good at making you do a lot of work, and learning about linux, but you also may loose the patch of hair sitting on top of your head
