    MPlayer

I would like to get MPlayer installed and up and running. From what I've read about it, it seems to be the best player available for any platform.
I was reading about installing it and what I was reading said to get the source and compile it. There is also an RPM version of MPlayer.
Would there be a difference in compiling it by source as opposed to installing by RPM? If getting the source is, for whatever reason, a better way to do it, then I will go that route. However if it doesn't really matter, I would rather go with the RPM. As I am not to proficient in compiling source code.

    Re:MPlayer

Source will talyor it toward your system, so it may run a little faster overall. Source should be used when you wish to learn something or need that little bit of power increase otherwise the rpm should be used in cases where you don't know what you are doing, or don't wish to mess your system up, or fill it up with useless crap.

In almost all cases you can get rid of an rpm, because you can always open it up to see where the files installed to. However, unless you're keeping track of source installation directories, and filenames, getting rid of it completely may prove to be painful.

    Re:MPlayer

I had MPlayer already installed on my system with SuSE 8.2. I took it off because I thought that I should do it the other way. The way that it was on my system by default, would I just have to install the codecs to be able to see movie files?
I could get it to open up before but that was about it, but I couldn't get it to play anything.
I tried to install the other RPM from the MPlayer home page but I had problems with it. So I think I'm going to put it back with Yast.

    Re:MPlayer

MPlyaer by default should be able to play just about any video file you want. However if you mean .mov by movie, then you'll have to do extra steps upon installation. This is all covered at their website.

Using either the rpm or source is fine, which ever you can get to work for you.
