So are you saying that you can hear system sounds, or can you play mp3s through your speakers?
Ok i installed Slackware 9.0- Everything looks good.
I can get sound, I can mount data cd's and read them with no probs.
But i cant get it to play audio cd's with XMMS or K'sCD
Usually i just fire up the cdplayer program and it finds the cd in the drive.
Any ideas?
Its better to regret something you have done than to regret something you havent done :P

I can play mp3's, i can hear system sounds, i can read data cd's, but i cant play an Audio CD?
All im doing is putting the CD in the drive then opening KsCD or XMMS, but then i cant get them to play the cd. If i browse to the cd dir - theres nothing there (obviously)
I used to just press play on the cd player in redhat and it would work.
Am i missing something simple, like a configuration thing?
I checked and its pointing to the right player /dev/hdc
??

You need to make sure you have the CD audio player plugin for Xmms. I place the CD-Rom into the drive, and I don't even have to mount it. I just have to add my /mnt/cdrom directory to the playlist, and listen from there.

I am wondering why things randomly work, then break, and then work again....
I think his box got into his beer supply.
