Linux install

hello everyone
i am having a problem installing Linux on my machine.. i have a Dual AMD MP2100+ machine with one gig of pc2100 ddr ram... i can install mandrake 8, however.. i have 8.2 and 9 beta ready to install ... 8 will install, but the others hang in the middle of the install.... is there anything i could do for this not to happen???

and for a beginner, mandrake, or red hat?

Where does it hang? Is there something you are doing that consistantly causes it? What comes to mind initially is that you may need to add a flag or two in the beginning of the install before you select the graphical install or whatever.
