if you want just a normal 56k modem, go for an external one that connects to the serial port
I am a windows user running a box with XP,98 and Linux RedHat 8.........My modem does not support Linux so would like to know which modem to buy that will support windows + Linux.

Yeah, I like external modems better anyway. If you ever need to use it on another PC. It's easy to switch between the two. Also make sure it's a hardware modem. If it's a winmodem, then more then likely it's not going to work in Linux.
