RedHat 8.0 Devfs IEEE1394 SBP2 Questions:
RedHat 8.0 kernel 126.96.36.199.0 Mandrake 9.0 kernel 2.4.19-16mdk
Background: Computer with an Audigy Firewire controller: connections:
ADS Technologies device containing a DVD rom drive
Oxford device with a Maxtor 60gb hard drive.
Works fine in Windows and Mandrake 9.0.
RedHat 8.0 > detects the ADS & Oxford devices but always get error message "IEEE11394 SBP2 failed to logon to device > (the dvd & hard drive). Have seen several posts on this at Linux 1394.org.
Mandrake uses devfs when booting > creates device entries such as scsi/host1/bus0/target1/lun0/disc. In the Mandrake Control Center you can see the devices listed as scd1 & sda1 with the corresponding devfs info.
RedHat doesn't do this by default. In watching the Mandrake boot up messages I see info in the beginning such as "/dev/scd1: no such device" & "modprobe insmod sbp2 failed" but later I then see /dev/scd1 mounted as read only. This is where I figure the Mandrake use of mounting devfs devices comes into play. If I'm wrong someone please correct me.
That is why I want to get devfs working with RedHat 8.0. I've tried enabling thedevfs option during "xconfig" when compiling a new kernel. When I reboot I see a bunch of messages such as /devfs(?) failed to create /scsi/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/whatever.
I also get a message regarding the display > something about "spawning" > then I have to reboot into the working kernel.
So now that I've gotten this far > I want to know the correct way to get evfs working with RedHat 8.0. Is it not built into the RH kernel? If not is there an RPM on the RH cd's or do I have to download a tar file and install it?
This has been very frustrating trying to get the firewire device working with RH 8.0. They work straight out of the box with Mandrake 9.0. I thought Mandrake was a RedHat based Linux distribution > so I've been at a loss as to why I can't get this to work. Have too muc time invested in this quest to give up now.

Red Hat does not in anyway support the use of devfs. For one reason they consider it a potential security hole. Plus it is a dead end. It will not be in the nect generation kernel. I very seriously doubt that even if you could manage to get devfs working, it would not cure your problem.
