Access Linux from Windoze

Because of problems with Windoze to Windoze networking (again), which I fixed, ;D, I delved back into Linux to Windoze networking. I can access my Windoze latpop from my Suse box via LinNeighborhood. After a lot of playing around, I can now see my Linux box in Network Neighborhood on my Windoze laptop. It shows up as Samba 2.2.6-Suse (Linux). But, when I try to access it, I get this:

\\Linux is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator to find out if you have access permission.

The network path was not found.

I do not have a firewall running on Windows.

I am so close...can you guys get me over the last hurdle?

Probably your smbpasswd on the samba server?

add a user called Mugs with
useradd Mugs

Add SMB password with

smbpasswd -a Mugs
(type the password or leave blank for none)
(confirm password)

then try connect to it with user Mugs.

or you can replace the User Mugs for whatever the username is on the doze box so you dont have to enter the user in the dialog box. The smb password should be the same as the password on the doze machine.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried what you said, but had no luck. I dont get a prompt from the doze box for user name and password, it just comes right up and gives the message I posted.

I tried useradd and it just adds users to my Linux box.

Also, I cannot see the linux machine from doze until I manually start nmbd. How do I make that start automatically?

There has to be something in SUSE that changes the services the run at boot time. But since I have never used SUSE, I don't know where it might be. :P

Might take a look at the SUSE docs.

Maybe Samba isnt running when you are trying to connect?

what does 'service smb status' show?

to play with the service you can use

service smb start/restart/stop/status

Dunno about suse and starting at boot time

I am not that concerned with nmbd right now. I really want to be able to access Linux from Windows. I have tried and tried and still no luck. I can see it, but cant access it. Is there something I have to do on XP?

Latest: I turned the Firewall off via Yast2 and when I try to access Linux from 'doze it gives me a username and password box. However, I still cant connect ??? If I type in a username it changes it to the name of the windows box followed by what I typed in: Laptop\mugs, after I put in the password and hit ok.....????

This is driving me crazy. From a Win98 machine I can also see my Linux box, when I try to get to it it says I need a password for \\Linux\IPC$
