    Missing files on CD

I made two CDs in Windows using Nero. The CDs each have about 5500+ files on them. When I view them in Explorer, all of the files are accounted for and their total size is accurate. However, when I copied them (while in Mandrake 9, KDE) to a directory in my /home, only 3500 on each disc copied. When I view the CD contents (in Linux), it shows that the CDs only have about 3500 files each. What happened to the other 2000 on each disc? Is this another one of my newbie mistakes? Any help would be GREAT! Thanks again Linux community!

How exactly did you copy them?

    Re:Missing files on CD

Well, I had two folders, NEW and NEW2, one for each cd. Each folder contained around 5500 images and files, not subdivided, just in the root of the NEW folders. I clicked and dragged them into a compilation window and clicked burn. When I burned the disc, it told me the properties of what I was burning, as far as the size, and it was right on. I just can't figure out why 7000 jpegs out of 11000 would show up in Linux, but all 11000 would show in Windows...

Possible that konqueror will not display directories containing such a large number of files. Since I don't have KDE installed, I have no way to test this theory. :P

    Re:Missing files on CD

interesting, i use KDE, i haven't come across anything that was too big to open. But i can say this, i know nautilus has a file limit, and it notifies you when it can't open any more. Where there any messages? BTW, isn't there a way to get a file count off the CLI? maybe you could try using cp -R /mnt/cdrom/NEW /home/<user name>/NEW or something.

I'm not 100% sure here, but if any of those files used Joliet extensions, then perhaps your kernel doesn't have joliet support compiled into it. If this is the case then I could see why you cannot see the files. However I was under the impression that an entire CD had to be joliet, this is why I'm not 100% sure here.

I guess a way to check this is: Do the pictures that you cannot see, have really long filenames?

Some of the file names are long, but not longer than 255 characters. Nero checks that stuff when you burn the disc and will ask you if you still want to continue. I didn't get any error messages because of that, so I can only assume...
I have seen this before... recompiling the kernel. How the heck do you do that? I can see why, but when you start talking programming stuff (assembling, compiling...) it is all greek. That is something I would love to start getting involved in (especially seeing that Linux has built in Python stuff) but I think I'd better learn the OS first...
