Getting Mandrake 9 connected to network & internet

    ( Host= 950 Duron running Win2k, AnologX proxy)
( Client= 366 PII running Win2k, installing Mandrake on 3 Gb partition) install messed up cuz 2nd CD was fried. Reburning ISO and trying again.

The Proxy I'm running isn't what I expected and I'm thinking of configuring the ICS on Windows 2000, but I really need to know,

Can Mandrake also use the ICS to connect to the internet??
How do I set that up on Mandrake 9?

    Any ideas or comments?

Re:Getting Mandrake 9 connected to network & internet

If you running ICS on Win 2000, Mandrake can use it as long as the IP Adress is a private address i.e 192.168.0.X with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway should point to the Win2000 box, which should be 192.168.0.1 by default.

All this can be configured in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

ICS makes the host 192.168.0.1 by default
    With the subnet mask 255.255.255.0

You will also need to setup the DNS servers you use in /etc/resolve.conf

ICS also runs a litle dhcp server as well, but i dont really know what this is capable of? You could try getting an address dynamically and see what happens?

If I were u I would blow away the windows install on the host and install Linux. Then use iptables masquerading to share the internet connection and iptables filtering to act as a firewall. Use dhcpd to offer IP addresses to the clients and use squid to be the proxy server.

    Good luck

    Frisky's suggestion

Thanks, if I ever get the install for Mandrake done I think it'll work for the client computer. However there's no way I could install Linux on the Host, there's too much data to backup and no time to teach others how to use Linux and teach myself also.

Besides not all users are ready to give up Microsoft just yet, same in my situation but I am slowly migrating over.

Thought I'd start with Mandrake since everyone says it's good for beginners.
