I guess my problem's the same, but I don't understand any of your solutions so far..
System = RH8 & GF2 mx400
How do I go about "rolling back" drivers to the last working vresion ??
I ran NVchooser & DL'd the recommended files, after install had to logout & in again to complete, then it FUBAR !!
Apparently it can't load the X system (whatever that is), all I get is the X-figurator running & trying to reload X with different settings, none of which happens!
Please Help this confused linux newbie !!! :-[

dubster: to roll-back you have to 'unchange' your XF86Config (change 'nvidia' to 'nv', make sure 'glx' is on) and uninstall the nvidia drivers:
rpm -e NVIDIA_GLX
rpm -e NVIDIA_kernel
Next time make a backup of the files you change (XG86Config) so it's easy to undo everything.
uninstallating the nvidia GLX will also put back some files it renamed that are needed for the linux glx driver.
Looks good, ill have to try it when i get my puter working agaion.....Originally Posted by Bogler

The only thing I don't like about it is that he tells you to use the XF86Config on that site. An XF86Config is specific to a persons hardware, monitor, mouse....

I just used the same XFree86 file that i did in 7.3.
Make sure that all previous Nvidia rpms are de-installed and then try the above. Also make sure the kernel source is installed.
It worked first time for me.

someone elses XF86Config was what i needed all along
i now have FINALLY my nvidia drivers running. The problem was (and still is it turns out) my monitor, for some reason if i tell X what monitor i have (Iiyama VisionMaster Pro 450) it fucks up my screen, now with someone elses BAAAD monitor settings i can run 1600x1200 but i am getting a headache in 5 minutes flat due to the terribble low refreshrate.
Whats the deal with refreshrates under linux anyway? can i set the refreshrate manually? or does x just try the highest setting which is higher then my VCard can handle.
check the "Monitor" section of your XF86Config and see if the "HorizSync" and "VertRefresh" setting are correct for your monitor. Maybe the setting are lower then your monitor is capable of displaying.

Really sorry to be so incredibly stoopid, but...
How do I edit a file ??
I've tried emacs & couldn't even quit out of it, let alone work out what the hell was happnin!
Is there anything as dead simple as Dos's EDIT I can use?
You have to realise I've never tried editing a file in linux before, but am very computer literate, just not Linux literate.. YET !!
Well something worked !! Thanks SunDevil . . .
I never managed to edit the XF86 file after all, just did the rpm -e things then rebooted.
Got onto my desktop straight away !! HOORAH.. Man that's a happy sight, after 3 days of stressin out...
Thanks for all your comments, info & ideas people, you've got me going again!
