    Re:Made the switch -need a little help

    Just another thourght while reading this again-

    Im not sure if you can have a samba client and a samba server on the same box.

    If you can see the xp files from the red hat box then you are running the client.

    If you want to read the files on a red hat box from xp then u need the server.

    Hmmm not sure but i think this is right - hope someone can prove me wrong.
    Its better to regret something you have done than to regret something you havent done :P

    Re:Made the switch -need a little help

    Glad you havent given up.Thanx

    Got a response from the smbpasswd -a
    Says it did it and gave me a message about finding mail at var/spool/mail/root
    Dont know how to open it as it yet
    testing the XP machine when it gets booted up.

    Well I must have made one too many changes in the smb.cong file. cant see the samba server now!
    I'll have to try and reset to default

    I still have a conection.
    I can still type in the XP machine from the linux box and browse files.
    Dont know why XP machine lost the linux box tho

    Got the Samba server showing in windows xp again.
    Gives the same message as before. Contact network administrator.
    Maybe your comment about client/server is right?
    In the service configuration there shows a
    "snmbd" What is that about?
    Do I need it running?
    Tried it and it dont help anyway.

    Just to take a shot at Spot's post, in defence of wader, without actually contributing any:

    From a Windows users perspective, calling a binary an exe isn't inaccurate. The file is executuable, therefore it could be accurately defined as an exe, especially since all the extension in Windows really signifies is that the file is a Portable Executable.

    It's working guys!
    new smb.conf:

    workgroup = games
    netbios name = linuxbox
    server string = samba server
    security = share

    path = /public
    writeable = yes
    browseable = yes
    guest ok = yes

    I still get a Lan://localhost error when I want to browse on the linux box but I work it out.
