Is Shorewall a good firewall to use on a desktop running Mandrake 8.2 with a cable internet connection? I want to make sure that my machine is secure. The problem is I am not that familiar with Linux to know very much about security. I know that there are a few different firewalls that come with Linux but as far as which one is best for which set of circumstances I don't know. Shorewall seems to be the one I'm looking for, I even thought I had it running but when I boot up it says that it failed so I'm not sure what's going on. I really need some help with this.
I don't know anything about Shorewall, but what I do know is that iptables is a very powerful firewall, that is included with the 2.4. kernels. People say that a properly configured iptables firewall is as efficient as a CheckPoint firewall, which is impressive.
I'd say take a look into iptables.
