    can't unpack the programs

Alright, I admit it, I'm a newbie, but I read enough stuff that I thought I could feel this thing out for myself. I got linux up and working, and I got my network configured, but now when I try to install /unpack a program it tells me that it can't find the directory. I know it's there. I can go through the file manager and look at it, but it won't unpack. If anyone has any pointers please let me know!
    Thanks
    Martina
