    Modem forced connect speed commands

I have a Diamond supramax 56i modem runnning in Linux 8 (Suse).

The thing connects at 56700 apparently, all the time, but I think this is too high for my line. USR modems on my windows computers typically connect at 44000 or 48000.

The literature that I've read on modem commands doesn't really tell me how to try to force a speed, except for the old, slower speeds 28.8 and lower.

What is the trick to getting speeds like 44000 or 48000?
