what type of software is it?
mandrake used RPM files for ease of use to install but you might also want to use source packages
read this for rpm help:

That would depend on how the software is packaged. Mandrake's documentation seems to be lacking. At least what I just pulled up on Mandrake's website. :POriginally Posted by DMAN
Is the docs that are included in the boxed set this bad?
At least Red Hat provides some pretty good docs. They could be expanded, but compared to what I see from Mandrake they are an encyclopedia.

That all depends on what file manager you happen to be using. If you're using the default KDE file manager (aka konqueror) the KDE help system is excellent. When I click on an icon it asks me what I want to open it with but i don't have a clue?

Yea,I have been down the Drake road and docs in their boxed set I got were very lacking.A 5 min. search on the net would yield more information.
No help...still lost. All I know is that when I click on an icon that looks like a gear, I get a window that opens up and asks me what to open it with...they are usually .exe files.
well, theres the problem.
linux does not run windows executable files

There's no way to make them run? And are all the icons that look like gears .exe files?
you can run (some) windows programs on linux using wine (winehq.com or codeweavers.com)
not all cog proggies are windows, they have the +x attrib set (in a console, type ls -l and see on the left column)
windows things seem to have +x on them when copied from a fat partition to ext
