Installing on Fujitsu Lifebook Laptop

Hi all. My gf has imparted upon me a great gift. A new laptop!

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone has experience installing on a Fujitsu Lifebook. Here's a link that describes the specs:

Does anyone see any pitfalls installing linux on this laptop? I've searched http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/ for the model, but it's not listed to have any documentation. What I'm most concerned about is getting the DVD/CD-RW combo drive working. Is this possible under linux?

NOt sure about the CD/DVD but you may have problems with the sound. I have an onboard AC97 and when i last looked ALSA didn't support. I had to use the (paid for) oss drivers and now it works fine.

The modem may be winmodem apart from that it looks like a great machine.

You are going to have problems with the video. Only very recent versions of XFree86 4.2.x have support for the i830 chipset and there are still issues with it.

Thanks for the heads up JimH. I'm planning on trying to install Gentoo (yes, i know, i'm crazy) as a weekend project. XFree86 that comes with Gentoo is 4.2.0:

I'm gonna check out XFree86 site and see if I can find anything. I'll keep you guys posted

What I meant by "recent versions of XFree86" was current XFree86 CVS.

It's funny you say this, because I'm posting this from my newly installed laptop. Installation and configuration went without a hitch. Still early in the install, but i've already tested video and sound with xine. No hiccups whatsoever.

I guess what's left is the DVD/CD-RW combo. I'm going to attempt writing with groaster as well as play some dvd movies to test it. Also a concern are the pcmia stuff. I've actually never dealt with them before, and I don't have any devices to even test it. I guess we'll see.

Anyways, I'm glad i didn't listen to you guys :P
