Well you could start off by removing all of the Ximian packages.
For a list of what is installed.
rpm -qa | grep -i ximian | sort

If you've read below and seen about my attempt at getting gnome 2 installed you'll see that I ended up with a gnome1/2 hybrid.
my own fault, as I'd also tried ximian gnome as well.
aaannyway, I'm using mandrake 8.2 and though I prefer KDE 3 to gnome 1.4 or 2 I'd kinda like to fix my gnome
whats the best, and easiest way to get gnome back to a mandrake 8.2 state so when mandrake officially release some gnome2 rpm's I can get them in?

I agree with JimH on this one. You see, Ximian likes to replace your already installed rpms with their own rpms. For example, if you have gaim installed, it will replace this with gaim-ximian.
Unfortunately, removing all of the Ximian packages would mean breaking alot of dependencies (that the ximian replace packages are needed for). Be sure to install whatever you remove from ximian with their Mandrake rpm.
I took the easy way out...reinstalled ;D
after a couple of hours work it's pretty much as it was before i attempted ugrading gnome....i'll now wait for the official rpms...or i may give gargnome a try
This was probably the best way until you learn more.Originally Posted by Static

lol I didn't reinstall because it was easier..i did it cos it was quicker to reinstall then reupdate kde to 3.02 and install any apps than it was to rip out gnome/gnome2 bastardised hybrid and get gnome back in..I *could* have done it (mandrakeuser.org has a howto on it) but couldn't be a*sed ;D
