    newbie in need...

I've been using windows since 3.11 and have used every revision since.......linux on the other hand I've just installed (without knowing *zip* about it) mainly in the hope of moving to this OS once I've got my feet dirty.

    I've installed RedHat 7.1
how in gods name do I start X?
    What is X?

My guess is X is a gui for RedHat....but anyone who can stop laughing long enough to help me with this question I would be much indebted to. ???

After you login, at a shell prompt type:

    startx

That is assuming you installed X and configured it during the install. "startx" would be the same as typing "win" at the dos prompt in Win3.1

X is just a windowing system. A linux GUI would be Gnome or KDE, etc....

    ;D

    Good place to start

Make sure you update your system with the errata available for Red Hat 7.1. It has been out a long time. There are a lot of updates.
