shares not viewable on server even with port scan

hi guys

I got a mystery on my hands. I setup a samba server on my laptop works great win clients can see the server shares.

I setup a linux box server, did a port scan and the shares cannot be seen although they are there. i did a port scan on my laptop server and and shares can be seen. here is my smb.conf for the linux box, where the cannot be seen.

I have disabled firewalls just in case you were wondering. :'(

Hmm more guesses here coz im a newbie but can you even ping your samba server?

Did you set up the:
smbpasswd -a (user)

How many intertfaces are on the samba server that connects to your network?

Is the smb.conf file exactly the same as the one in the laptop?

type this at the command prompt:
locate BROWSING.txt

I can ping the server, I have only one nic for server. Yes its the same smb.conf as laptop server.

another silly question to ask yourself - are the shares you are trying to share even on the server and what are the permissions set for them.

Im guessing you can see the samba server but not the shares?

If not, is samba running? ie type
service smb status

if it's not type:
service smb start (then reboot windows heh heh)

i dont know if im insulting your knowledge here but hey! im a newbie :P

Also have the same workgroup name and dont forget the smbpasswd -a. Otherwise someone else might have to help u?

its ok i dont take offense easily, in networking you need broad shoulders.

permission are read/write. samba is running. I do the ps ax to see all runnng apps. the accounts have been setup in samba.

mind you there could be a problem with nic, but I doubt it. Back to the drawing board i think.

Just a thought. I have seen a couple posts to the Red Hat mailing list of people having trouble getting Samba to work. Everything looked to be setup correctly, but it just would not work. It was suggested to save their smb.conf, uninstall and reintall all the Samba rpm's. For some unknown strange reason doing this cured their problem.
