    redhat in nt network

    Hi,

I'm new to Linux so i thought i'd setup a Linuxmachine at work. I installed redhat 7.0 and the machine is hooked up to a NT/Novell network. I already got the internet connection going, but how do i mount drives/folders inside the network?
Also i tried using samba with the command service smb start
    reply: smb: unrecognized service.
    tnx in advance

You need the Samba server.. see the other Samba thread.

Check out the red hat section and we just discussed SAMBA.

Have you got your network card going? Can you ftp and telnet to other machines on the LAN?

THere are also Novell clients for Linux, i'm pretty sure Novell has downloads.

    Welcome to GLO ;D

You don't have the Samba server installed.

The Samba server is not required to just mount shares.

    mount -t smbfs -o username=<username>,password=<password> //1.2.3.4/share /mnt/point/

The mount command calls smbmount with the supplied arguments. You might want to look at the manpage for smbmount it provides information (along with the other options available for mounting smbfs shares) on a more secure way to mount your shares using the "credentials" option.

One more thing. Red Hat 7.0 is very old and was not the greatest version ever released by Red Hat. :P You might consider using something newer.

    Re:redhat in nt network

    I tried all the above.

    mount -t smbfs -o username=carlo,password=****** //server001/sys /mnt/f

The reply is: 5142: Connection to server001 failed
    SMB connection failed

    I even installed Mandrake 8.2
Internet is working, i can telnet to a Cisco ISDN router, I can print to our Tektronix networkprinter.
I feel that i'm soooo close, yet so far away.... :-[

Can you view the shares available on the server. Try this and see if you can login and view the shares. Replace host with your server.

    smbclient -L host

    Re:Mandrake in nt network

    ;D
I can mount another windows machine in the network.
I was trying to get connected to //server001/sys wich is a NetWare Host. Atleast thats what my windows machine says.

Tnx JimH for all the help!

    Re: Mandrake in nt network

    I couldn't start a new topic, that's why i continued this one.

Mounting went very well, i only have one problem. After i give the mount command 'mount -t smbfs -orw //ms6533-02/share /mnt/ms6533-02' mandrake asks for a password. On the Linux machine i am logged in as root. On the WinXP machine i made a user root. still it asks for a password. The machines are not in the same workgroup or domain.

btw. when i am logged is as my ordinairy username, i can even mount at all. Only allowed to root.
