Don't use wu-ftpd for a publically access ftp server - you'll be sorry if you do. For public access, go with ProFTPd, snag the docs and read them - they're pretty straightforward.
Since you're behind a router, you'll also want to read up on everything you can get your hands on about PASV(passive) transfers. Running on a non-standard port(standard is 21) will cause you some headaches until you get it all configured properly.

. i would like to make my machine into an ftp server. i looked into this area and found out a few things. as i understand it, it can be very dangerous if security is not configured right. also. i am working behind a router. i have used ssh before and i know that in order for someone else to access my machine, i had to open a port up on the router. i believe that this will be the same deal if i set up a server. i found a utility called kwu-ftpd that seemingly allows me to configure the server, but i can't seem to figure out how to start it too. if anyone knows about the security end of things i would appreciate the help. Also, if there are any good howtos you know of, drop those too. heh, and if i am not even on the right track, don't be afraid to say so ;D ;D
