newbie needs help with NIC card!! (again this topic)

hi, i have mandrake 8.2 and it's the very first time i have contact with linux and although hard it's very very interesting!! i need to install my ethernet card it's a surecom EP-320X-S and the driver instructions in the disk are :

    1. copy the source code fealnx.c to Linux,

    2. compile the source code, the instruction for compiling the driver is
    as follows:

    #gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet -Wall
    -Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -c fealnx.c

    3. insert the driver as module,

    #insmod fealnx.o

    4. bind your card to an IP address

    #ifconfig eth0 ${IPADDR} broadcast ${BROADCAST} netmask ${NETMASK}

    5. add your card to IP routing table,

    #route add -net ${NETWORK} netmask ${NETMADK} eth0

    6. now, you should be able to ping local network.

PS : I have installed the linux kernel and copied the fealnx.c to /usr/src/linux/ folder but haven't made it further, plz help the new linux enthousiast noob!!

PS 2: my NIC is not supported and i tried all (!! yes one by one) the models in the installation procedure!

    thanks again!!

Hmmm, interesting the fealnx.o module source code is included in the kernel source on my Red Hat install. Red Hat however chose not to enable it in the default kernel configs. That might not be a good sign. :P

Lets see if the module is on your system already maybe you don't have to compile it. Type these commands one at a time at a shell prompt.

You will have to be the root user to run this command.

Don't have to be root to run this one. Post the output.
    locate fealnx

first of all thank u for your fast reply....

Well after copying the fealnx.c to the linux kernel i try to do the rest of the instrunctions of my driver diskette.. i got a lot of error msgs so i stopped, then in the graphic environment i opened the hardware list but all i got was a blank (black) screen.. so i decided to do a fresh install !!
After the new istallation i did the above (updade and locate) and i got the following output :

so i suppose that i had the file after all, but what can i do from now on?? will it help if i e-mail u the object file (fealnx.o) and/or the fealnx.c file??

    thank you in advance!!

Open /etc/modules.conf in a text editor.

    Add the line:

    alias eth0 fealnx

    Save your changes and exit.

    Then at the shell prompt:

    /sbin/modprobe -v eth0

This should load the module. Post any error messages you get.

To see if the module loaded:

You can see if there is an eth0 interface now with:

You must be root to edit /etc/modules.conf and to load the module.

the line at fealnx was already there...

    i executed /sbin/modprobe -v eth0 with no errors
then /sbin/lsmod and got the following :

    # /sbin/lsmod

    5912 0 (autoclean)ext3
    62092 2 jbd
    39356 2 [ext3]nd

and then the /sbin/ifconfig and got the following:

    # /sbin/ifconfig

    inet addr:
    UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

Ok the module is loaded. you just need to configure the network setting.

Look in Mandrake Control Center under Network & Internet Connections

If you have any problems from there one of the Mandrake users on the board should be able to help you out. I don't use Mandrake.
