Red Hat 7.3 video resolution change

    Hey, Gang!

Probably will get smacked for this easy question but have a Dell Inspiron Laptop 2600 running Red Hat 7.3 and it finally runs gnome at 600x480 16 bit. How in the heck do I change the video resolution? I can't find it anywhere. I'm reading posts about ControlCentre > Display, but don't think RH has that. I've tried manually changing the Xf86 config file but when it boots up, still runs the same, so obviosuly not doing it right. I've even run Xconfigurator, but since I can't get back to text mode (have to run in Terminal Emulation) it just locks up. Please help!

Please don't post the same thing to multiple forums, people will see your posts.

What video chipset does your laptop use?

Are you editing the correct config file? /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

These kind of problems are why I never recommend booting runlevel 5. At least until you know X is properly running.

    Edit you /etc/inittab
    Change this line:

    :id:5:initdefault
    to
    :id:3:initdefault:

    Then as root:
    telinit q

ou should be able to get to the console prompt now.

    Thanks for the help, Jim!!

Spot, sorry for the multiple posts. Just not sure which forum to do. Didn't mean to abuse it and I won't do it again.

    Thanks again to you both!

Runlevel 3 your system is booted to console mode and you have to manually start the X server.

Runlevel 5 your system is booted directly into X.
