    Cannot start x

I installed Redhat 7.3-vahalla on a 350 MHz, 128MB RAM PC with a Silicon Integrates Systems 5598/6326 video drivers.

Graphical login does not work, I only get a text line interface. I tried startx and xinit, both do not work. Tried Mandrake 8.2 and redhat 7.2 on same system, xwindows does not work on any of them. Any help is appreciated.

    Re:Cannot start x

What is the error message displayed on the console when startx fails?

You might be able to copy and paste the error message from /var/log/XFree86.0.log.

    Re:Cannot start x

    /var/log/XFree86.0.log does not exist.

Here are the commands and outputs I first received :

    >xinit

execve failed for /etc/X11/X (errno 2)
    giving up
xinit : No such file or directory (errno 2) : unable to connect to Xserver
xinit : No such process (errno 3) : server error

    >startx

    - The output was same as xinit

So, I went to /etc/X11/X. No file or dir called X or XFree86.0.log

    I did
    >find /etc/X11/X -name log -print

Output : Nothing, so I assume no such files are found.

    >whereis log

Output : One log file turned up, but the contents are nothing related to XFree86.O.log or a Xserver.

My Last attempt was to try blackbox directly:

    > blackbox

BaseDisplay :: BaseDisplay : Connection to X Server failed.

Any assistance is kindly appreciated. Thank you.

    Re:Cannot start x

    Post the output of this:

    rpm -qa | grep XFree86

    Does this file exist?

    /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86

Sounds like all the required XFree86 files are not installed.
If they are installed try this as root:

    cd /etc/X11
    ln -s ../../usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 X

    Re:Cannot start x

Output of rpm -qa | grep XFree86

    XFree86-4.2.0-10mdk

    XFree86-libs-4.2.0-10mdk

    XFree86-xfs-4.2.0-10mdk

    XFree86-75dpi-fonts-4.2.0-10mdk

    XFree86-100dpi-fonts-4.2.0-10mdk

    XFree86-server-4.2.0-10mdk

    XFree86-devel-4.2.0-10mdk

    - The file /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 exists.

    -Tried cd /etc/X11
ln -s ../../usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 X at root as su.

    - output:

    ln :'X': File exists

    Thanks.

    Re:Cannot start x

    Ok try another approach.

    ls -l /etc/X11/X

    locate xinit

    rpm -V XFree86

And have you tried reconfiguring X? Do you know what Mandrake uses to configure X from the command line?

Usually the error you are getting is caused by a missing symlink.

    Re:Cannot start x

mandrake uses drakX, it has a console and an X mode, just run it as root, or use the built in X confgurator(XF86Config??)

I thought dakX was only a GUI config tool?

nup, all mandrake config programs have two parts, the gui and a console version, quite cool actually
