    VNC for Linux

    Anyone used VNC for Linux.
I have a Debian laptop which i have networked to my RH7.3 box.
I would like to use VNC so that i can sit in comfort and chat to Oscar.

The files are rpm. Itake it that it should work RH7.3 server and Debian client?
Also, my debian box is a Compaq Armada with one of those touch pad mouse thingies. Anyone know how to configure this is X?

    regards

Red Hat 7.3 comes with VNC.

$ rpm -qa | grep vnc
    vnc-server-3.3.3r2-28
    vnc-doc-3.3.3r2-28
    vnc-3.3.3r2-28

Unless you unselected the option they should already be installed.

If you want to display your RH 7.3 desktop on the Debian laptop yes.

    Nope.
What model is it? Try http://www.linux-laptop.net/

Most of them (including mine) are set up as a ps/2 mouse.

    Thanks Spot

I got the touchpad working after some adventures...

However, i have been unable to get VNC working. I am using a client on Debian called 3dwfm_vncclient or something similar.
It keeps complaining about correct usage

    server port password

I have created a password and as far as i can see it should work as i have even taken the firewall down.

Any other clients i should be trying-anyone used 3dwfm_vncclient before

    Thanks

I am not familiar with that client. You do have the vnc server configured and running on your Red Hat box?

    Re:VNC for Linux

I have installed the VNC server on the RH bow and started the service with service vnc start.

I then took the firewall down between the boxes and tried a client to serve hook up. It's at this stage i get the usage complaints.

I have also set a password using the vncpasswd command.

    I'll keep trying.

    Thanks for your help.

    Re:VNC for Linux

I don't know anything about the client you are trying to use. That doesn't help any. :P

The vnc viewer I have used I just enter the ip address then it will prompt me for the password and thats it.

It keeps complaining about correct usage

    server port password
Your client seems to also be asking for the port. Might try a different viewer or check the docs again on the one you have. I assume that you don have a network connection between the two boxes. Can the two boxes ping each other?

    Re:VNC for Linux

    What viewer would you recommend?
I discovered a file in /etc/sysconfig (or similar) called vncserver.
I had a look at this and i had to uncomment a line in there to get the daemon to run.
    I'll continue playing with it.

    Regards
