Telnet - Please help

Maybe a simple question,, I hope !!

I have set my linux system up so that i can telnet into it from another machine, All works well, when i log into the system it say 'welcome to suse 7.1' and then when im logged in it says 'have fun!'

My question !

Is there a file somewhere where i can change what it says?

or does anybody know where i can find some documentation regarding the telnet service on linux.

Sorry, I wont be answering your question in this post, I have to be a work soon. I just want to let you know that telnet transmits the password in plain text, so if a malice attaker was to watch your login, then that attacker would have access to your machine.

I would suggest using ssh as it transmits the password encrypted.

its just on my home lan so that i can administer my samba server without plugging a monitor into it- i read a little about ssh please tell me more

Mainly i would just like to know how to change the text that pops up on the telnet client, when i telnet into the samba server it says welcome to suse linux 7.1 , i just want to change that to somthing else , there must be a config file somewhere but i can not find it.

In most rpm-based distros, that info is kept in the file /etc/redhat-release. You can change what is says there, add some stuff, or remove it entirely. I can't say that's the case for Suse, but it's at least a place to start looking. You can also add things to the file /etc/profile, which will occur immediately upon login.
As far as using telnet goes - don't - even on a lan. It's just plain insecure, and using insecure stuff is just plain bad practice, IMO. Get used to using the more secure login of openssh or one of the commercial versions of ssh. Docs are everywhere you might search.

its totally free, with windows and linux versions
