I (my mate) has a problem with X in that it crashes on bootup.
Hes set to runlevel 5 and has the graphical mandrake LILO.
i don't know of any way to get to a command prompt to tell it to boot up into rulevel 3.
Any ideas??

Doh..that's not a parameter to be passed at boot, sorry about that. Check here for a huge list:
http://www.linuxhq.com/kernel/v2.4/d...eters.txt.html
At the boot prompt type:
linux 3
This will boot runlevel 3.

Why not just boot with a rescue disk and edit /etc/inittab?
Jim H
im starting to think that thats the only other option.
now i have to make a guess on where / is.....
(ie he didn't make a rescue disk)
i think its on hda, as he only has linux installed, we shall see
hmm, afterthought:
maybe you could reset the X server just as it boots up, might work

You should be able to use CD 1 as a rescue disk.
