Even though you login as su, you still retain the init paths given to the user you are working under.

Aragorn: I've never noticed that before... I don't even think that happened when I used RH or MDK. Correct me if I'm wrong.It definately isn't that way with Slack.

It isn't that way with slack? Its the way it is with Debian, and it is the way it has been with every distro I have ever used. I am really quite surprised it isn't that way with Slack.

So you mean when you go into SU mode you then have access to /sbin from anywhere??

If you use just "su" you have to type the full path to any programs in /sbin or /usr/sbin. To get around this use "su -". This will make the shell a login shell and you will not have to type the full path.

If a slackware user types in su to become root, then from anywhere in the system said person can access /sbin/command without the need to type /sbin.

When a slack user su's root, their path turns into the default root path. Just to add to what SkyNet said...

Seems to be a lot of confusion about "su" ?

I always use "su -l" - This makes it a login shell.

su -l or su - makes the computer run the stuff that it would if you logged in from a console.
this includes changhin to the default directory wich can be annoying if you just want to do a make install.

about the menu editor, i believe it is gmenu(for gnome, not KDE, although if someone knows of one for KDE, lemme know :P)
