well, I am not sure... okay, so I have dual boot, and my two computers are networked, both using Windows 2000.......... but when I log into this one into linux, I don't think they are networked... I am using a simple 4-port router. I have internet, as you can see, so I dunno... I don't know how to network a windows machine to a linux or vice versa really... and yes, I'm using NTFS on my win2k partitions

How do you have the router setup?

Does it dynamically serve IPs to your Windows and Linux machines?

Can you post the IP address information of your internal network?
(obviously, don't post your external IP to the forum)

Can you 'ping' one machine from the other?

What exactly do you want to do? Share files from the Windows machine to the Linux machine, vice-versa or both?

Off the top of my head, I'd say you want to use Samba and access the Windows machine using the SMB protocol.

After you get the network card set up, make sure the machines can ping each other. Log in under root. Find the main control center for the distribituion (not KDE, Gnome, etc.), there should be a network option for sharing. Follow the instructions.

both of my computers receiver internal IP addresses automatically from the router. My IP is like 192.168.2.24 and the other one is 192.168.2.32. I want them both to be able to share files back and forth, if possible, if not, then I want my linux machine to be able to read files off of the windows machine.

If your router is assigning ip addresses automatically, then you're using DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). I suggest assigning static IP numbers (it's been easier from my experience).

I agree that having static IPs would make things easier, so if you can configure the router to do so, you should at least try it. Otherwise, just allowing access to the entire 192.168.2.0/24 network would work for your current situation. Providing you can, at this point, ping each machine from the other one you should take a look at SMB HOWTO and grab yourself a copy of samba. Everything is spelled out pretty neatly in the HOWTO, if you run into some snags, let us know.
