I don't know much about it myself, but when I did a search for 'redirection' at http://www.linuxdoc.org , a few interesting tidbits came up. The Text-Terminal-HOWTO seemed to have some info that might be relevent for you.

I,m doing a paper on the commands that linux uses and the use of redirection is there a site i can go to get all this info on both the commands and how to use and what the redirection will do to the commands. sorry I need theis Info ASAP
