Well, any comments about Mandrake 8.1 yet, from those of you who have it up and running? Which one of the Mandrake user's we have is going to volunteer and do the review for the site?
Welp, I mirrored it locally on my win2k box (only one with enough space) so I could attempt to install it on my laptop via pcmcia/ftp, as I don't have a cd-rom for the laptop. The pcmcia boot disk got my NIC up and running *perfectly*, wish I could've said the same for Debian, and the base installed without a hitch.
Went thru, picked out my preferred packages, and went for the install.
<INSERT SCREAMING AND SWEARING HERE>
Every single package it attmpted to install was corrupt. I don't know how or why, but it wouldn't install a single one.
Soooooo....as soon as I can get on a decent mirror to grab ISOs, I'll try again.

Yeh, I guess this is the peril of a new distro release. We go "OOO, let's download that!", along with a few thousand other people, and the mirrors fill up. Corrupted download is harsh though.
Yep, same with RedHat when a new release comes out. The problem with alot of distro's, is I think they make the announcement before the mirrors have time to sync their sites and this just makes it worse. Plus Mandrake's announcement last week about the impending release probably had alot of people keeping a close eye on their ftp site.Yeh, I guess this is the peril of a new distro release. I finally got into a mirror site! I'm downloading the first CD from Austria at 10k a second. Only 15 hours to go! WOO!

LOL. Did you try ftp.free.fr. I usually get very good download speeds from them when I grab a RedHat ISO. I just looked they have the 8.1 ISO's.I finally got into a mirror site! I'm downloading the first CD from Austria at 10k a second. Only 15 hours to go! WOO!

So far, so bueno, but I've *got* to go get me a copy of Opera asap!
Mandrake download journal:
Hour 1: find open mirror, begin downloading, anxiously watch bandwidth counter....
Hour 12: Windows crashes
Hour 13: Download restarted with getright
Hour 23: Wake up to find out getright corrupted install iso.
Hour 24: Crying in corner
Hour 25: Start download again.
*sigh*
