    Hi, I wrote an NHF over at the LNO -http://www.linuxnewbie.org
    on compiling a kernel for Mandrake (and R.H.) I have submitted it here for inclusion to the OMP, so you may care to go to the LNO and read it.

    It has never failed me yet,

    Very nice. You might consider adding a section on configuring grub.conf to go along with the section on lilo.conf. You might also add a reference for Red Hat users to load one of Red Hat's default kernel configs as a good place to start. For users new to compiling kernels having a working config to start with would be a big help.
