Thats a stumper.
Seeing as how I can't do much with documents I would just print it and then scan it into whatever. Clumsy but it does get the job done, eh?
When you find the REAL answer be sure to let us know.
the thing is this is for my dad the document is 67 pages long or so and he already scanned every single page, and his intent is to fax it over the computer, but every time he uses the fax wizard it switch the default printer an hp psc xxxx to not default, so he feels switching the format to doc would solve all of this, i know open office 1.9 had a tool like this but it didnt work for me.
i think i may have found something just started up synaptic and got everything that had pdf in it, every file
i dont have much time to play with it now, actually none working on a paper but if anyone else has any other suggestions i would appreciate them.

A useful tool for manipulating PDF documents
If PDF is electronic paper, then pdftk is an electronic stapler-remover,
hole-punch, binder, secret-decoder-ring, and X-Ray-glasses. Pdftk is a
simple tool for doing everyday things with PDF documents. Keep one in the
top drawer of your desktop and use it to:
- Merge PDF documents
- Split PDF pages into a new document
- Decrypt input as necessary (password required)
- Encrypt output as desired
- Fill PDF Forms with FDF Data and/or Flatten Forms
- Apply a Background Watermark
- Report PDF on metrics, including metadata and bookmarks
- Update PDF Metadata
- Attach Files to PDF Pages or the PDF Document
- Unpack PDF Attachments
- Burst a PDF document into single pages
- Uncompress and re-compress page streams
- Repair corrupted PDF (where possible)

I think Scribus has features to import and alter a PDF, as well.
