I went over to gentoo, but i am still working on some module issues. They are superficial though, so that shouldn't hang me up for too long :P

Skynet: good to hear you have gnome going now

Well, I had it going before, but in the 2.2 stages, I was just excited because of all the good stuff I remember reading about that went into Gnome 2.4. Plus I prefer Gnome over KDE, but I'm a Fluxbox fan, so I don't use it reguardless.

well i hope you give fc2 a go when it comes out.. it should be quite cool. Especially with 2.6 kernel and hopefully a better stream of packages coming from fedora.us (that *don't* break dvd ripping > > > > > )

Ive been quite enjoying fedora.. maybe its just my loyalty to redhat.. :P as i said before, the only problem i have is not being able to run dvdrip.. im not sure what did that, as babbing got it working fine on basicly an identical setup

it got it going, but now, and mind you, i have been in gentoo so i haven't touched anything, it doesn't want to work. Before, i could only get it to encode an mpeg vcd with some special screen ratio. FC1 failed me, it looked neat at first, and like anthing else, it has it flaws, but the more i went on, the more i just couldn't use it. In all fairness, this could also be the result of 3rd party rpms, but isn't that our only option. I think what we are seeing here is redhats system colliding with the rest of the world.

the flaw in red hats system, there is too much things that base on it, not all systems are the same and if something is from a non-similar system it will mess up, this is why i dislike it because i had alot of problems when i used mandrake.

redhat does do it's own thing, but it has never been an issue before because obtaining reliable rpms wasn't an issue. i think that the community may just need more time to settle in.

Right now, I'm not sure which system I like better a Slackware, or a Gentoo. I can still definity get around my Slackware system alot better, but I'm starting to get the hang of these USE flags, and emerge system.

I think what would make Slackware alot better was a better package tool. pkgtool is could, but I'd like to see something implemented like Vector Linux did with it. Where I can do my ./configure; make, and then for make install I would run pkg -n nameofpakcage, and it would then do the make install, and package it to that name, then install it. That way everything I installed on the system I could keep track of.

Other then that one little quick, the BSD init system there is by far my favorite.

i have to agree with you skynet, i can get around Slackware alot easier, but thats because i have used it longer, when i start actually using gentoo and playing around with it alot it will come fairly easy. its just finding where the minor differences are.
