    Perl and Strings

Hmmm, ok, I am getting Perl down pretty well, but I am getting quite irritated with the way it handles strings! I can see how perl's string handling is quite powerful, but jeez, it could use a different syntax to hand them. I can remember all ths //\\dds\dfdwq?//d/ blah stuff(yes I know that was just garble, but it got my point across). Do you guys know of an easy way to remember all this junk, or a simplified way of doing it? PLEASE?! :'( :'(
