Thread: Mail Interface

    Mail Interface

Well guys, I am programming a pop3 mail interface for the website, but before I get to far, I am wanting to know if you'll actually use it or not. If not, do you think many people would? I kinda see some kinda desire for it in some people, so, lets hear it, do you want one? Also, if you program in Python at all and want to join forces on making this thing, let me know!

Well boys and girls, I have the backend pop3 server and smpt server built, as well as I have the database built to accept your guys' profiles. I am working on the front end, and should be up in a week or two....I am excited about it, I'd like to hear your feedback on the idea!

    Re: Mail Interface

Well if any of you care ;D, I have the system built. Jman has to get around and pretty the interface up a bit, which hopefully shouldn't take him to long since it is equivalent to about 10 html pages and one graphic. I will have the beta up for login in about a week I hope, that depends on Jman it could be longer or sooner. I will be adding a section to the board for feedback and debugging, so that I can track errors and add features as recommended. I am also going to talk our host to see if we can work out a deal so that you guys can get @getlinuxonline.com addresses.....

If any of you are paying attention to this thread, here's an update:

The interface prettying is under way, and I think we'll need to do some tweaking and testing to the script. Now, the real difficulty here is that we're limited to approximately 50 user names on this server, so we're gonna run out fast at that rate. We may not be taking the interface live until we manage to get dedicated hosting. Hopefully once I finally move into a new place I'll be able to drop in DSL and put up a linux box to serve.

    Re: Mail Interface

Well good news on that too....we can all have an @getlinuxonline.com addy.....so I have to rework the code to take care of that...but then it will be set!

    Aragorn,

What programming language did you start with? I know you've suggested Python, but is that suitable for a person VERY new to programming. Do you know of any good books for the beginner? I wish I could go back to school for this but no-can-do. I teach myself just about everything so lab work is limited to all nighters with my computer. :

    Heathp,

I used Python, I'll upload the source code to the Programmers Refuge here at the site and you'll be able to see. I haven't done much commenting but it is kinda easy to read. Python is a GREAT!!! language to use for a very new programmer. Also, I'll help you out with anything you'll need, we can learn the language together, because in all honesty I just learned the language a few weeks ago and I was able to program a mail client. I don't have it up on the site yet because I am waiting for my host to set it up so that we can all have @getlinuxonline.com addy's....but I'll have the sources up as soon as I can. As far as books, hmm....O'Reilly books are always great, I didn't get any Python books because the documentation that comes with Python is outstanding!!! I'll look around though and see what I can find! ;D
