    Backgrounds and Themes

Are there any good sites for making the default Gnome environment look a bit, er, groovy. I like sci-fi etc, really just looking for some decent jpgs for backgrounds etc....

    Re: Backgrounds and Themes

http://www.themes.org/ is the only one I know about that has Gnome themes. I think Gnome's popularity has really dropped since KDE 2.0 was released.

I use KDE most of the time now and I only used Gnome before. I do like the Gnome 1.4, although I think Nautilus is WAY to bloated. It does run pretty good if you turn off all the garbage. We will have to wait and see what Gnome 2.0 has in store.

You can also copy any background found in Windows to a directory on your disk and use that JPEG file. I'm using the Red Moon Desert that comes with XP. People can't figure out if I'm running Linux or XP looking at the machine quickly.

Except for one update to kdelibs, the lastest KDE packages for Red Hat 7.1 are the ones on your cd's. You you actulcally be better off upgrading ot RH 7.2. The improvements to KDE are huge over 7.1.

I don't have any 7.1 installs, I will get a list of rpm's to install and post it.

    Re: Backgrounds and Themes

Ok this should be everything for RH 7.1. All of these are on the cd's.
Copy them into a directory and just: rpm -Uvh *.rpm
If you see any dependency errors, I forgot something. Check and see if any of these are already installed. I didn't list the devel rpm's , if you want them also just copy them from the cd's also.

    kdeadmin-2.1.1-3.i386.rpm
    kdebase-2.1.1-8.i386.rpm
    kdelibs-2.1.1-5.i386.rpm

To switch from desktops, at the console prompt:

    To use Gnome:
    switchdesk GNOME

    To use KDE
    switchdesk KDE

    Then just: startx
