    Nvidia problem in SuSE 7.3

    Hi,

I have a fresh SuSE 7.3 installation, and a Asus V8200 GeForce3 card with Athlon 1.2 GHZ. I have downloaded the Nvidia drivers with Online update, and when I rebooted I could get KDE and X running ok.

But my fps is now very slow, and after awhile gears now won't even run, and exits with 'Segmentation fault'. Something's obviuosly not working ok.

I have also performed these steps in XFree86config:
    - Load "glx"
    - "nv" to "nvidia"
    - Option "NvAgp" "1"

Sax2 will run and configure the card but does not fix anything. The same goes for running 'xfree86config2.

Has anyone installed a Geforce3 card on SuSE 7.3 with success, and could help me out here?

    Regards,

    Jostein Berntsen

PS: The card was running perfectly in SuSE 7.1 with about 4500 fps in gears. Now the fps is about 20!

Josh could probably help you out with this, I don't use Nvidia cards. He should be online later.

You might try reading this LinuxWorld two-part article on installing the Geforce3.

I can probably help out with this like JimH said, but you need to post a copy of your XF86Config-4 file...that way I can see what ur configuration is like

    Hi,

Thanks for answers. I now have included my XFree86Config file.

Re: Nvidia problem in SuSE 7.3

You might post the version of the Nvidia drivers you are using. Might help give Aragorn I idea what the problem is.

Re: Nvidia problem in SuSE 7.3

I use the NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2313.i386.rpm and NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2313.i386.rpm downloaded from SuSE.

Re: Nvidia problem in SuSE 7.3

Well by the look of it, I think it might be your drivers that you downloaded. I would try removing those and going to the nvidia site and downloading their own drivers. Your Xf86Config-4 file is perfectly fine....so I can only assume it is the drivers. Do you get the splash screen when X loads up?

Re: Nvidia problem in SuSE 7.3

I looked on Nvidia's website he seem to have the newest version available.

What kernel are you running? According to the Nvidia website the drivers are for the 2.4.16 kernel.

You might look at /var/log/XFree86.0.log and see if it shows any warnings or errors.

Re: Nvidia problem in SuSE 7.3

    Hi,

There is no (EE) in my /var/log/XFree86.0.log, only some (WW) about fonts and one about APM.

I use the 2.4.10-4GB kernel included with the SuSE 7.3 distribution. Maybe I should upgrade to the 2.4.16?

I get a Nvidia splash screen at bootup. The problem is that I get 'Segmentation fault' when starting gears and also Yast2.

Re: Nvidia problem in SuSE 7.3

    From the Nvidia readme:

though please note that the binary rpms are for use only with the kernel shipped with a particular distribution
If you have upgraded your kernel (either manually, or through a distribution upgrade), or a specific NVIDIA_kernel rpm is not available for your distribution, then use either the NVIDIA_kernel srpm or tar file.

If I am reading the Nvidia download site correctly the driver version you have works with:
Updated to work with SuSE Kernel Update 2.4.16

The driver version you have appears to be for the 2.4.16 kernel.

    Nvidia Linux driver page
    http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=linux

They apparently have a program that will tell you what to download.
STEP 3B: Download Kernel Driver File
If you are using one of the distributions listed below you can simply download the appropriate file and install it. If you are using a distribution or kernel version that is not listed, or if you have an updated or non-default kernel, you must build the kernel module. If your distribution does not support RPMs please use the tar file provided. If you are unsure of which file you need please download and run NVchooser.
